It eventually boiled down to the last-wicket pair for Hong Kong as Nadeem Ahmed and Tanveer Ahmed got together with 16 needed from 10 balls, and eventually brought it down to 10 needed off the final over. That's when Paul van Meekeren held his nerve to produce a brilliant over. The right-arm medium pacer didn't complicate things by trying to overachieve against two lower-order batsmen. The back of a length deliveries sprinkled with the odd bouncer worked perfectly well to stifle their attempted big shots. Needing a six off the final ball, Nadeem Ahmed grounded a drive to mid off as Netherlands prevailed in the contest.
The hosts were left to wonder as to how it fell apart after a brilliant 197-run partnership between Anshuman Rath and Babar Hayat for the third-wicket. The duo got together at 53/2, during a period of play where Netherlands were gaining momentum with two quick wickets. But the pair went about their business masterfully as they initially started by milking the bowling around with the odd boundary here and there, before Rath started shifting gears and Hayat dropping anchor.
Rath got to his hundred, lost his partner, but that only served to accelerate the scoring as Nizakat Khan came flying out of the blocks with a few lusty blows. It was not until the 45th over, with the required rate under eight, that the game took a decisive turn. Michael Rippon removed Rath and Nizakat off successive deliveries. The immediate danger of Ehsan Khan, who had got off to a flier, was extinguished two overs later by Roelof van der Merwe and the rest of the lower order just buckled. Rath's heroics didn't deserve the manner in which his fellow team-mates bottled the chase.
While Hong Kong's performance was based on the brilliance of a couple of their batsmen, Netherlands were boosted by handy contributions from a bunch of players from the top to lower order. Stephan Myburgh (88) held firm at the top and led a recovery of sorts along with Ben Cooper, after losing his opening partner Michael Rippon for a duck. After Myburgh's departure, the pair of van der Merwe (62) and Peter Borren (40) capitalized on the foundation and provided the surge with a couple of breezy knocks. Pieter Seelaar then capped off with a half-century of his own.
